Sony’s blockchain platform, Soneium, has entered into a partnership with Coop Records to introduce its first music NFT collection. This initiative is designed to provide artists with new opportunities for monetizing their work while ensuring a more balanced distribution of profits through blockchain technology.

The collection includes a 22-minute track created by NUU$HI, a music producer based in Tokyo, and is available for purchase on Sonova, Soneium’s dedicated NFT marketplace. With a price point set at $2.11 (0.000777 ETH), 644 NFTs have already been minted, demonstrating growing interest in this model.

Enhancing Revenue Distribution for Artists

Coop Records, a decentralized music label with an extensive catalog of over 600 songs on the blockchain, is focused on addressing long-standing revenue imbalances among artists, record labels, and streaming services. By leveraging blockchain technology, the label intends to grant creators and their most engaged supporters greater influence over the monetization process.

Soneium, which officially launched its Ethereum Layer 2 mainnet in January, aligns with this objective. Sony’s Singapore-based Block Solutions Labs has identified the platform’s potential in safeguarding intellectual property rights while promoting more equitable revenue-sharing mechanisms. Since its inception, Soneium has amassed over 248,000 user accounts, laying the groundwork for significant transformation within the music sector.

Although Sony Music Group, the entity that owns major record labels such as Columbia and RCA, has not yet incorporated Soneium into its operations, the blockchain platform continues to advance its mission to redefine the way music is distributed and sold. By fostering innovation in digital rights management and ownership, Soneium is positioning itself as a key player in the evolving intersection of blockchain and the music industry.
